Soco – In Conversation:

Webs and Nets – The Exhibition

Thursday 4th September 2008
7.15 - 9.30pm
The Beacon, Hastings

Penny Precious leads our second discussion on “WEBS and NETS”, and will outline the plan for Soco's touring Textiles Exhibition in 2009.
Other presenting artists will include:

Carly Ralph who uses reclaimed materials from the local shoreline, eroded fragments and fibers, metal, rope and plastics.

Lorna Dallas-Conte, textile artist, collaborated with painter Carolyn Jackson in the recent Soco ‘Conversations' event. Together, they conversed and created an extraordinary piece of artwork that exposes layers of personal memories and emotions through metaphors with the folds, tears and darns and stains that are traces left by the ‘lives' of textiles.

Penny will explain submission requirements for the exhibition, and talk about taking textiles beyond existing boundaries to explore exciting and diverse directions.

Wine and food provided £5.00

To reserve places email : gl@gracelau.plus.com or socoartists@btconnect.com

Late arrivals will not be admitted. This is to prevent disruption to artists' presentations

SOCO – IN CONVERSATION
Series February – June 2008

First conversation February 28th
6.00pm -7.30 pm

A monthly series of artists talks
and portfolio presentations
to be held at Oak Passage Studios,
chaired by Grace Lau, with a different
panel of artists and art forms each time.
The events will involve the presentation
and discussion
of artists' work in progress,
with audience participation.

The first talk, on February 28th, will focus on photography as art. Three photographers will be on the panel with Grace as Chair. Andy Moran, tutor at Hastings College of Art, will talk about his MA work, followed by the Lambie Brothers presenting their latest portraits of artists. The audience will be encouraged to join in with their (critical or otherwise) comments and refreshments will be available.

SOCO members are requested to participate – either on the panel – or/and in the audience. This is an opportunity to present your artwork in progress, talk about it and receive helpful response. There will be an exhibition in summer to show your work, whether it is finished or not.

If you are interested, please email socoartists@btconnect.com with your idea and brief description of your art-in-progress

Conversations

something experimental ……

SoCo artists are invited to pair up with another artist (not necessarily a member of SoCo), to exhibit work stimulated by a ‘conversation'.

There are no rules other than the exhibited work should reflect a dialogue that took place between the artists - anywhere, anytime, anyhow! Perhaps the present In Conversation talks and creative workshops could spark off a ‘conversation' - or any ongoing work that you're developing. Recent or previous work, notes, correspondence, influences / starting points can also be included.

A two week exhibition at the Beacon from 25 July to 8 August is planned. Artists will have app 3m x 2m wall space allocated between them (3d work – floor space by arrangement) and should be available to chat about their work during an informal late breakfast event during the exhibition period.

Conversations could result in a collaborative piece of work or be influential in creating new work that extends beyond the scope and time frame of this project.

There will be a small submission fee of £5 per artist which will contribute to costs. Work that is for sale will be subject to 25% commission.

Expressions of interest please to c.jackson811@btinternet.com  or tel 01424 423194 by May 24th.

There will be a chance for interested artists to meet and talk at Oak Passage Studio on Saturday 31st May at 11am.

JOSEPHINE HO
TEXTILE WORKSHOP AT THE BEACON
SUNDAY JUNE 22 nd 10am to 4pm
Admission Fee: Soco members: £12, non SoCo members: £15.
This includes a light lunch
BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL Deadline for booking is June 8 th . ( see booking form for full details)
Places are limited. We advise that you contact Judy Dewsbery at the Beacon 01424 431305, before sending any payment
There will be an additional £5 charge per person on the day for materials
(cotton, silk and dyes)

This experimental workshop will explore traditional resist techniques on paper and cloth using hot wax, (batik) and Japanese Shibori (meaning to literally wring, squeeze or press) By using either of these methods to form a resist to colour, the material is then painted or dipped into a dye or indigo bath. When the resist is untied, unfolded or unwaxed, an image is created which can be abstract, patterned or pictorial.

When using shibori, a 2D piece of material is transformed into a 3D form by using various methods such as stitching and gathering, binding, folding, twisting and clamping. The results after dyeing can be very unexpected and exciting.

Cotton and silk, dyes and tools for batik and shibori will be provided.

TO BRING:
1 Anything that could be used with hot wax to create interesting textures, shapes or lines – eg metal stamps, forks, nails wood etc
2 If you have any particular natural fabric – the finer the better, or paper that you would like to experiment with, do bring too.
3 Notebook and pen
4 Apron and rubber gloves – indigo is very messy !
5 Newspaper and plastic bags to carry wet fabric away with
6 Pegs and small sharp scissors

IN CONVERSATION :  “WEBS AND NETS”

Oak Passage Studios

8th May 6 – 7.30 pm.

Our next event will be led by Penny Precious and will explore the diverse potentials of textile art. Panellists include: Lorna Dallas-Conte, Jean Davey Winter, Susan Collins, Josephine Ho, and themes to be discussed will include the boundaries between traditional textile and fine art textiles; cultural metaphors that cloth and thread carry, referencing the title Webs and Nets; and the influence of travel, globalism and new technology on textile practices, beyond the merely decorative. Penny will focus on the ‘networking' and webbing' process of textile history and working, which has shifted from the home spun domestic to be incorporated into fine art practice.

This panel talk will lead to a major Touring Textiles Exhibition in 2009, and Soco will hold related workshops and talks, starting with a workshop on June  22 led by Josephine Ho on textile colouring

To reserve a place for May 8th, please email: gl@gracelau.plus.com <mailto:gl@gracelau.plus.com> no later than May 3rd. Due to limited space at Oak Passage, early booking is essential.
